Read the Words is a free text-to-speech online service that, while not as slick and shiny as its commercial software competitors, has support for multiple document formats (minus PowerPoint) and allows users to download their MP3 recordings to portable players, CD‘s, iTunes or Windows Media.

Users have a choice of 15 voices to create their recordings and a toolbar is available (for both Internet Explorer and Firefox) to help users access their accounts without having to visit the website.

Like other online TSS services, Read the Words supports podcasts, blogging, and embedded recordings for web pages (note: users are not allowed to sell or distribute the recordings created in their accounts).
