Augie Nieto is a former fitness buff and developer of fitness equipment who was diagnosed with ALS in 2005. He was interviewed on the Today Show several times early in his disease and this segment was an update. He now has no ability to use his voice or his hands and he is unable to walk. His wife provides his care as he is totally dependent on others for his daily needs. But he continues to advocate for funding to research ways to treat or prevent this disease. When he lost use of his hands, he used a large track ball with his feet to access the computer. Once he lost that ability, he turned to the IMAX eye tracking system from Dynavox to enable him to continue public speaking. He is currently using an eye gaze system to write his second book. It is an informative and inspirational story of a man who could have given up to the disease, but who has instead chosen to fight, through the use of assistive technologies, to help those who follow. This is a nice illustration of how the IMAX system works for those curious about voice technologies.
