<review>FX MathPack is a software package that enables secondary math teachers and students to create/complete assignments using only the computer. There are 4 components to the software: FX Draw, FX Equation, FX Graph, and FX Statistics. The software is available by download, free for 30 days, and then either by fees for Perpetual License (@$300) or Annual Subscription (@$72). Free email tutorials are offered. Students with disabilities can request free subscription codes. The software works just as the website says it will. Users can enter equations, create color-coded graphs, and solve math problems. Students who cannot use a mouse can type data in but there is no information to indicate whether voice input will work with the programs. By trying the program free for 30 days users can determine if the software meets their needs and is worth the investment.</review>

<review>ASLPro.com is a website established by a group of deaf education teachers and interpreters in Texas. The site was designed to be an American Sign Language (ASL) resource for teachers and deaf education staff, to help with communication and curriculum needs in the classroom. Resources are free and donations are accepted. Only one section requires setting up a user account and password. The site features Video Dictionaries of signs, both in an ABC format as well as conversational signs. There are quizzes for signs and for fingerspelling. There is an online store where products can be purchased. Links to other online resources are included. Advertising helps to support the site but it is not intrusive to visitors. This is a great resource for teachers and interpreters. While there are warnings that this is not a stand-alone ASL curriculum and should be consulted under guidance of a deaf education professional, teachers, interpreters, parents, and students of sign will find this a very useful resource. The quizzes themselves are worth a visit to this website.</review>

<review>This excellent blog covers assistive technology, eLearning, mind mapping, visual learning, collaborative tools and educational technology with real life examples and narratives. Many postings contain embedded video.

There is an emphasis on video learning, not only in products selected, but in the use of photos, graphs, and video to illustrate concepts and in showing examples of what can be achieved using the posted tools. A recent posting, for example, showed how to create tests using Google Docs and had suggestions for using text-to-speech software to let students hear the tests read aloud.

This reviewer frequently checks this blog for useful ideas to share with fellow teachers and parents of students for whom products may be useful.</review>

<review>This video was presented at the 2009 CEC Convention. My Own Bookshelf is a project designed to bring literacy into the lives of children with disabilities.

The video shows volunteers scanning books, the children adding their voices to the stories, and the children with disabilities enjoying the stories by themselves and with other children using switches and sharing their books with others through the same access technology.

This video illustrates the possibilities of using technology to integrate learning with all populations, and to create something entirely unique with relative ease.</review>

<review>The Unique Learning System is a comprehensive standards-based core curriculum that uses the current event format of News-2-You and a curriculum format that progresses through the grade levels. The Unique Learning System is meant to support literacy and content learning for students with significant disabilities and complex learning needs.

Unlike many other curriculum formats, Unique is exactly that-it is designed specifically for students with significant needs and is not a retrofitted or adapted version of an existing curriculum model. The Unique Learning System uses standards-based instruction and thematic units with a schedule of downloadable unit materials for all grades and access to an online performance tracking tool.

A subscription to The Unique Learning System varies in cost from $399/year for an individual license (single grade band), to as much as $31,920/year for a group license (100 users). She brings to her blog regular discussions and reviews of a number of applications that are designed for addressing the needs of learners in Special Education as well as instructional technology for everyone that can be tweaked to meet those same needs. The unique thing about this site is that every tool mentioned is used with a SmartBoard. This relatively new technology is a great way to involve multiple learners at one time, and the ideas given on this blog will help new users as well as those with experience create fun and exciting kinesthetic and visual learning experiences.</review>

<review>Written by AT professional Jeannette Van Houten, My Point of View is primarily focused on AT issues, conferences, and commentary or reviews of useful devices for clients with disabilities. The blog includes an extensive archive and topics vary widely (education technology integration, technology as a tool, using technology vs. wasting technology, educational toys, the role of technology in daily life, etc). My Point of View is a good place to find undiscovered tools, tech toys, and new takes on professional issues in the AT community. </review>

<review>Writing with Video is a fairly new concept that connects videos found on YouTube with writing and communicating ideas. This really is a website that needs to be seen to be understood. Unfortunately not all the links on this site work as they should - some are under construction. There are a great many videos that are downloaded but there is not a great deal of information that shows how they have been or can be used. The idea is that children with cognitive disabilities have difficulty with the writing process because it is not concrete to them. Using videos related to a topic gives these children something concrete to visualize first and then leads them to writing or communicating about that image.</review>

<review>Educating Emily is a Soundprint broadcast featuring the discovery of the abilities of a 12 year old child with multiple disabilities in rural West Virginia. Though this type of story is not new, the family‘s search for a way to discover Emily‘s potential and the eventual discovery of her abilities to communicate and to read through technology make it an affirmation of every family who has pursued such goals, and offers encouragement to those who are just starting the quest.

Educating Emily is available online at no cost as an audio download, or as a CD for $12.50; it would be worth having a copy to provide inspiration and validation to families.</review>

<review>This module from the Texas Assistive Technology Network (TATN) offers information and resources for successfully transitioning AT services and devices as part of transition planning. Allowing for some minor changes to the title lines and categories, the module examples can be considered a nearly universal resource that focuses on complying with IDEA 2004 and encourages students‘ self-determination in AT decisions. It seems that the module can be used for transition planning for students of all ages.

In addition to the handouts and worksheets, Supporting Transitions of Assistive Technology Users also includes an excellent set of presentation slides, and some striking QuickTime/Windows Media Player video tutorials, interviews, and testimonials highlighting students who have transitioned successfully throughout their school years while using several different types of AT. (Note--the videos may take time to load but they are worth it.) </review>

<review>Taking Charge: Stories of Success and Self-Determination is a video that presents a variety of people with disabilities, both youths and adults, who talk about how they achieved success. The video presentation, which takes about 16 minutes, is open-captioned and audio-described. Additionally you can download a script of the presentation. The DO-IT project materials are excellent because they provide role models for people with disabilities. Those who have never envisioned being successful can look at this video or any of the other DO-IT materials and see what is possible.

In this particular video self-determination and success are presented from the individuals‘ perspectives, emphasizing that success must be defined by “you" and that it is crucial to set goals and keep expectations high. Parents, friends and “stubbornness" helped the people in this video achieve their goals. It is also important to be aware of one‘s abilities in setting up strategies to achieve one‘s goals. Technology solutions which can lead to success are also presented. Make sure to look at the rest of the DO-IT site when visiting this link as their products and resources are excellent. </review>

<review>Fun With Letters is one part of a website called Chateau Meddybemps created to help children learn the alphabet and progress toward the writing of stories.

Fun With Letters has a Writing Guide and an Alphabet Practice Pad. A letter, either small or upper case, is selected in the writing guide, and this brings up a sheet of lined paper, and a cartoon figure draws the letter. This repeats until another action is taken. The Alphabet Practice Pad enables the learner to draw using the mouse, and copy the letter made by the ‘Spinner’, an animated spider character.

It takes a bit of experimentation to learn how to size both windows, to start ‘Spinner’ drawing the model, and finally to enable the learner to practice the same figure with the mouse. It is possible to print the practice sheets and this would show progress over time for a child, or learner. Other areas of the site give tips for learning about letters through discussing and finding examples of their shapes, making scrapbooks of letters, and finally creating stories.

This website would be of interest to families and teachers, as they encourage children to recognize and copy letters. </review>
