<review>The Patins Project is a program designed in the state of Indiana to develop organizational and professional capabilities within school systems in order to effectively deliver assistive technology services and implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. "PATINS" stands for Promoting Achievement through Technology and Instruction for All Students.

The program has developed five regional sites which offer computer refurbishing, a lending library, state-wide software purchases, and training, to assist school systems in effectively implementing a Universal Design approach to teaching and learning. The website provides examples of lesson plans that are comprehensive and include the scope and sequence from Indiana‘s state standards. These lesson plans are good templates for creating similar plans aligned with other state standards. Many school systems have already developed action plans for implementing UDL in their curricula and for evaluating progress.
</review>

    <review>Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, state departments of education are required to implement mediation guidelines. The National Center on Dispute Resolution (CADRE) is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. The CADRE website offers many resources and links to assist parents, LEA‘s, administrators, coordinators, and any person or professional who is looking for another step before due process. There is a searchable database that contains important information on many issues related to special education services. There are resources for each state, allowing users to identify local mediation resources. Step-by-step instructions are given for accessing a particular state‘s mediation process, not only for school-age children but for birth to 3 as well. This is a comprehensive site containing support details, links, and other pertinent resources and may be the best place to begin to navigate conflict resolution in special education. </review>

    <review>This is an incredible site from the National Geographic Society, created for anyone who has computer access. There are so many things to do at this website that users could spend days looking through the games, puzzles, coloring books and other activities that are available here. A lot of creativity has gone into creating the activities; the games and other projects make you think. This reviewer was excited by the wide variety of selections-the pictures are incredible and the activities are extremely interactive. There is also a section for parents. For a free website this is really good-make sure to check it out! </review>

    <review>The deluge of information available through the internet is amazing and increasing on a daily basis. However, for those with visual impairments or those who need to use a screen reader to read the information, it can be very time consuming scrolling through hundreds of websites until they find one that is accessible with their screen reader. Google has designed a web filter in which it prioritizes keyword search results according to a web site‘s accessibility. Otherwise, in appearance and function, it is identical to a typical Google search. This is a great idea that seems to work well.
</review>

    <review>FX MathPack is a software package that enables secondary math teachers and students to create/complete assignments using only the computer. There are 4 components to the software: FX Draw, FX Equation, FX Graph, and FX Statistics. The software is available by download, free for 30 days, and then either by fees for Perpetual License (@$300) or Annual Subscription (@$72). Free email tutorials are offered. Students with disabilities can request free subscription codes. The software works just as the website says it will. Users can enter equations, create color-coded graphs, and solve math problems. Students who cannot use a mouse can type data in but there is no information to indicate whether voice input will work with the programs. By trying the program free for 30 days users can determine if the software meets their needs and is worth the investment.</review>

    <review>AccessibilityPortal.org is a website that lists links and test cases for a variety of experimental, advanced technology for users with disabilities.

Accessibility Portal is a great example of the Ideal Group‘s mission to foster the design and development of accessible information and communications technology, paired with CLC Corporation‘s unassuming "techie geeks" approach to open-source development. It is a good place for AT professionals and developers who want a go-to list of emerging technology.

In addition to a "featured" link with information on SMS text by email, Skype‘s SMS text and "Voice Carry-Over", NextTalk.net, and Ideal‘s Speaking Pad application, the Accessibility Portal list includes:
- CLC‘s flagship Fire Vox (open-source screen reader browser extension for Mozilla Firefox)
- CLiCkSpeak (mouse-driven text-to-speech for sighted users)
- a link to SpokenText (online text to speech service previously reviewed by FCTD)
- Read The Words (another FCTD-reviewed online text to speech service)
- Werdz (phonetic spell-check)
- Ghotit (spell-check/text-to-speech/word meanings application designed for users with learning disabilities/dyslexia)
- several examples of accessible AJAX and MathML test files.</review>

    <review>This excellent blog covers assistive technology, eLearning, mind mapping, visual learning, collaborative tools and educational technology with real life examples and narratives. Many postings contain embedded video.

There is an emphasis on video learning, not only in products selected, but in the use of photos, graphs, and video to illustrate concepts and in showing examples of what can be achieved using the posted tools. A recent posting, for example, showed how to create tests using Google Docs and had suggestions for using text-to-speech software to let students hear the tests read aloud.

This reviewer frequently checks this blog for useful ideas to share with fellow teachers and parents of students for whom products may be useful.</review>

    <review>This is a web-based writing tool from Crick Software that looks like any word processor but has auditory support, wordbanks, word prediction, writing frames and many other supports. As with most Crick software, purchase allows teachers access to learninggrids.com, Crick‘s site for sharing resources including ready-made toolbars. Teachers can also post toolbars on this site.

The newest version is 1.3 which features phonetic word prediction, the ability to caption pictures, and a greater range of accessibility features including more speech options and better vision enhancements for all toolbars and menus.

Because it is an online resource, there is no software to download and it works with all computer platforms including Mac, Windows and Linux.

Pricing ranges from $1000-$1950 for an entire school subscription for the first year to $500-$950 for subsequent years. </review>

    <review>This video was presented at the 2009 CEC Convention. My Own Bookshelf is a project designed to bring literacy into the lives of children with disabilities.

The video shows volunteers scanning books, the children adding their voices to the stories, and the children with disabilities enjoying the stories by themselves and with other children using switches and sharing their books with others through the same access technology.

This video illustrates the possibilities of using technology to integrate learning with all populations, and to create something entirely unique with relative ease.</review>

    <review>With the popularity of touch phones and the ability to create software applications inexpensively, the market has been flooded with ingenious ideas. An application may be created for a specific audience but sometimes it becomes useful for anyone to use. This is the case with several "apps" created on Google’s Android software to make the touch-screen T-Mobile G1 accessible for users with visual impairments. T.V. Ramen and Charles Chen have created "apps" that can be used without having to use one’s eyes and this is useful for a driver, runner, or simply when outside and the glare is too much to be able to see the screen. The creators of this "shell" enables a user to dial, listen to a list of contacts, and even type a note and add to one’s contact list. The text to speech makes this application useful not only for individuals with visual impairments but for anyone who doesn‘t want to look at the screen while dialing a phone or inputting information.</review>
